Neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) are frequently used in anaesthesia. The appropriate use of NMBAs and their pharmacologic antagonists is dependent upon accurate assessment of the neuromuscular block using objective measurements obtained through quantitative neuromuscular monitors.The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC) recently published, independently from one another, Practice Guidelines for the management of neuromuscular blockade recommending the use of quantitative neuromuscular monitoring in all patients receiving NMBAs.
